Turn a photo into a cross-stitch chart

Choose a photo, set the width in stitches and the number of colours — and get a chart with DMC threads: a preview of the finished piece, a symbol grid, a legend and a PDF ready to print.

Everything runs in your browser. The photo stays on your computer or phone.

or drop it here JPG, PNG or WEBP

Settings

Easier to stitch: lone stitches and areas of 1–2 cells take the colour of their neighbours, very rare colours are merged. Smoother skies and skin, but the chart gets “noisier” and harder to stitch. Off by default.

How it works

  1. 1 Choose a photo (JPG, PNG or WEBP). Crop it to a square if you like.

  2. 2 Set the width in stitches, the fabric count and the number of colours. Click “Make the chart”.

  3. 3 Check the preview and the thread list, then download the PDF. Selling the chart? Mark a copy for each buyer right here.

Common questions

How big will the finished piece be?

Size = stitches ÷ fabric count × 2.54 cm. 100 stitches on Aida 14 is about 18 cm; on Aida 18 about 14 cm. Add 5–8 cm of fabric on each side for framing.

Which threads does the chart use?

DMC six-strand floss, 454 colours. Every colour of the photo is matched to the closest thread (CIEDE2000). Thread codes and names are facts; screen colours are approximate.

Why does the chart look blocky?

A cross stitch is a square: the fewer the stitches, the rougher the picture. For a face use at least 100–150 stitches in width and 25–40 colours; for a landscape 80–120 are often enough.
